Are you concerned that drinking or drugs may be hurting one of your friends? Take control by caring. Care about them. Understand that they may be embarrassed, confused or afraid by their parent's drinking or drug use. They
may not invite you to their house. They may get defensive about their parents in general.

One of the best things you can do for them is to listen. If they talk to you about it, listen. If they share how it makes them feel, listen. Listen with an open mind. Then, encourage them to talk with an adult. If your friend is willing to break the silence with you, tell them that they cannot make their parents stop drinking or quit taking drugs. Tell them that they can get help for themselves. They can do it without worrying about their parents finding out about it, too.

If you live around Madison, Wisconsin, call 608-246-HELP (608-246-4357). You can call the number and talk with someone about your friend's problem. Or give the number to your friend.

If you're not from the Madison area, look in your local telephone book for AlaNon or AlaTeen. They can get you to a good source. If you're online, take a minute to check out some online sites.
